Timber & Other Products - Sheet Materials - Plywood

Plywood is a sheet material made by gluing together a number of thin veneers or plies of softwood or hardwood.

The number of veneers and the glue used in the manufacture of plywood determine its strength and suitablity for a particular application. It is a versatile material when it comes to building and construction.

It is suitable for many internal and external applications due to its durability and hard wearing surface. It can be stained or treated to give that special effect and it is less likely to warp than softwood due to its laminated layer structure.

A common reason for using plywood instead of plain wood is resistance to cracking, shrinkage, warping/twisting and its general high degree of strength.

There are different types of plywood dependent on their end use :-

  • Plywood to EN636-2 and EN314-2 - This type of plywood can be used outside. Water resistant adhesives are used to protect the wood and withstand a certain amount of moisture.

  • Non-Structural Plywood - A softwood plywood bonded with a water and boil proof glue.  It is suitable for a multitude of uses from construction to packaging, furniture to site hoarding as well as shuttering when pouring concrete. It is not for use as a permanent installation.

  • Structural Plywood - A shuttering or sheathing ply which uses water and boil proof glue; these sheets are also normally graded for use as structural ply. It is for use when plywood is to be a permanent installation.

  • Marine Plywood - Stronger than other ply and is easier to mould, bend and cut than fibreglass, marine plywood can resist warping from excess heat and can last long in damp conditions. This ply is obviously perfect for boat building and construction near rivers and areas of damp.

We stock Far Eastern Plywood which is made from tropical hardwood. The plywood is water and boil proof (WBP) with a knot free high quality finish. It is strong, durable, and resistant to splitting, cracking and distorting. It is rated with low expansion and shrinkage making it suitable when used in all dimensions.

WBP Plywood is used for many purposes including :- internal floors,  partitioning, furniture, bath panelling, boxing in pipes, storage boxes, sheds, packing cases, shelving, van lining, joinery, and signs. The surface can be varnished or painted. It can also be used externally as long as the edges and the face of the board are preserved with a treatment.

We stock the following products and  sizes :-

WBP Hardwood Ply -  3.6mm x 2440 x 1220; 5.5mm x 2440 x 1220; 9mm x 2440 x 1220; 12mm x 2440 x 1220; 15mm x 2440 x 1220; 18mm x 2440 x 1220; 25mm x 2440 x1220; WBP Structural Sheathing –  9mm x 2400 x 1200; WBP GIS Shuttering – 18mm x 2440 x 1220.
